When The Crowds Have Gone

Produced by Peter Bennett

Released by Babel-Label http://www.babellabel.co.uk/

I was very pleased to get the opportunity to record and produce an album for guitar virtuoso, singer, composer and electrifying performer Billy Jenkins for leading UK jazz label Babel, owned by Oliver Weindling. I didn’t really have ambitions as a producer, this one just landed in my lap. I had a home studio, and I’d recorded Billy with John Bentley of UK group Squeeze, and Paul Uden on an unreleased work which went really well, so Billy asked me to do the album. I’m happy that I got an album right and stands as one sweet jewel in the crown. It’s fairly simple acoustic work, one reviewer amused me by describing it as a ‘Saturnine production’. A lot of it was Billy solo, but we were joined by the very talented bass player, and prominent member of the UK jazz scene Steve Watts on bass and virtuoso violin player Dylan Bates brother of prominent UK jazz player and band leader, Django Bates. It’s a very coherent, ‘themed’ album and a a privilege to be a part of it.

It was positively reviewed in UK national newspapers The Observer and The Sunday Times, the UK’s biggest selling jazz monthly magazine Jazzwise and many other publications…
